• Scientific rationale

The Congress "Osteoporosis and alterations of bone mineral metabolism in the general population and in chronic kidney disease", now in its 6th edition, will take place in Padua on 22-23-24 March 2023. This edition, after the one held in April, will allow us to proceed on the path of a recovery that hopefully will continue and not find the difficulties of the last two years. Skeletal fragility is one of the major complications in the general population but also in what is termed a systemic disorder of mineral metabolism in chronic kidney disease (Chronic Kidney Disease - Related Bone and Mineral Disease: CKD-MBD). Furthermore, considering the high mortality rate associated to this complication, it is necessary to implement new prevention, diagnosis and therapy strategies in clinical practice for a correct and prompt management of fragility fractures.

The Congress, also in this edition, offers a rich and articulated programme of various sessions: bone and diabetes, bone and cardiovascular link, bone and dialysis, as well as a focus on vit. K and vit. D and their fundamental role on "bone quality" for bone health. In addition, an up to date will be made on known and established drugs for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism (etelcalcetide), and/or for the prevention of fragility fractures (denosumab and romozosumab); new old erythropoietins, new chelators and new vit. D (slow release) for the prevention and treatment of hyperparathyroidism and also in CKD not on dialysis.

Also in this edition there will be practical sessions dedicated to: ultrasound of the parathyroid glands, REMS, bone biopsy, and microindentation with the aim of providing participants with an in-depth study and an update in clinical practice, useful for consolidating a correct approach to diagnosis and follow-up. up in specific clinical settings (hyperparathyroidism, CKD-MB, and osteoporosis).

Finally, as always, there will be a session dedicated to young people, poster session and interactive session, with clinical cases, to stimulate and involve more and more young doctors and trainees to approach the diseases of mineral metabolism and fracture pathology even in patients with CKD.

The objective of the congress will therefore be to guarantee to all participants an in-depth study and therefore an educational growth on prevention, diagnosis and therapy of osteoporosis in the general population and in chronic kidney disease on the basis of the most recent evidence in the literature, but also to offer the tools necessary to create a fruitful multidisciplinary collaboration, essential to improve the care of our patients.
